For all Southern California dwellers and for all of you planning to visit those arid climes at the end of this month, we've got another music mega-event to tell you about. It's the third annual Coachella Music and Arts Festival, which will take place in the desert outside Palm Springs the weekend of April 27th and 28th.

The festival was conceived by Perry Farrell in conjunction with the Los Angeles-based promotions company Goldenvoice; it's the same vision of a massive, multifaceted music and art event that inspired Farrell to start Lollapalooza in 1991. Borrowing the Indio valley where the event is held, the promoters staged the first Coachella, featuring headliners Beck, Tool, Rage Against the Machine, and Moby, over two 115-degree October days in 1999. The second Coachella, a one-day event this time, occurred in 2001 and saw a Jane's Addiction reunion as well as performances by Paul Oakenfold, Weezer, Fatboy Slim, and the Chemical Brothers.

Oakenfold and the Chemical Brothers will both be back in 2002, as will a number of big time DJs and electronic acts, including Dan the Automator, Groove Armada, BT, Sasha & Digweed, Tiesto, The Prodigy, and Mixmaster Mike. Perry Farrell will also be performing under the name DJ Peretz. Some of the finest hip hop acts in the biz will take the stage, including Mos Def, Dilated Peoples, The Pharcyde, and Jurassic 5. And finally, this year's festival will feature a wide range of mainstream and underground rock acts, including a much-anticipated Siouxsie and the Banshees reunion, Oasis, Bjork, Foo Fighters, Belle & Sebastian, Cornershop, The Beta Band, The Charlatans UK, Blonde Redhead, and plenty more.

As you've probably guessed, all the artists featured below will be performing at this year's Coachella.

In other news: if you glance to your left, you'll see that there's some cool new stuff on Epitonic. And closeted David Haselhoff enthusiasts, this one's for you.
Groove Armada
"M 2 Many" by Groove Armada
Groove Armada fuse latter day funk with modern day technology from their studio embedded deep in the English countryside. Their hearthside house has been the subject of much media hype, and for good reason.

BT
"Movement In Still Life" by BT
Brian Transeau -- America's answer to Sasha -- may be best known for peak-hour progressive trance, but he now shows an affinity for more interesting forms of electronic music.

Miguel Migs
"Up in Smoke (Migs' and Jelly's Smokey Groove)" by Miguel Migs
House master DJ/producer Miguel Migs comes clean with the debut record on Zebra...a slamming fog city house track.

Zero 7
var cart = new CartItem( 'simplethings' ); cart.setAlbumName( 'Zero 7 - Simple Things' ); cart.setAlbumImage( '/art/artists/zero7/simplethings_logo75.gif' ); items['471539'] = cart;
"Destiny" by Zero 7
Smooth, laid-back, soulful downtempo from a pair of superstar London-based producers.

Herbert
"Leave Me Now" by Herbert
As Wishmountain, Doctor Rockit, and Radio Boy, Matthew Herbert has been a pioneering force in electronic music since the mid '90s. His creative work has been the mainstay of an endless list of labels, including Warp, Universal Language, and Phonography, as well as his own Soundslike, Lifelike, and Accidental imprints.

The Pharcyde
"Funny Style: Part One" by The Pharcyde
The '90s turned out to be a bizarre ride indeed for South Central L.A. rap impressarios The Pharcyde -- or as our more granola brothers and sisters might put it, "a long, strange trip." But Imani, Bootie Brown, and Slim Kid Tre are back on the block with stories to tell, so listen up and don't let them pass you by.

Bjork
"Verandi" by Bjork
In her decade-long career since parting ways with the Sugarcubes, this famous Icelandic diva has changed the way we think about pop and electronic music. And with her every move, she keeps on surprising us.

Blonde Redhead
"Missile ++" by Blonde Redhead
These New York-based art rockers continue to create hypnotizing, ambiguous compositions that are at once darkly beautiful and sublimely unsettling. Their dense spider webs of sound conjure the moment after you've emerged from the shadowy, terrifying landscape of a dream, when the adrenaline still flows like fire through your body and you can't yet recall how the world works.

The Strokes
"Last Nite" by The Strokes
This quintet of Manhattan hipsters produces extremely catchy, gritty garage rock reminiscent of the Velvets and the late '70s CBGB's crew.

Elbow
"Newborn" by Elbow
Manchester England's Elbow has presented us with a beautifully orchestrated debut album, heavily influenced by Radiohead and other expansive British bands.
