Kitty-Yo

Berlin-based Kitty-Yo got its start in 1993 when founders Raik Hölzel and Patrick Wagner (of Surrogat) met at Hölzel's weekly radio show. Kitty-Yo artists are sonic collagists who borrow elements from rock and pop, rap and hip hop, house and techno, abstract and experimental, and even jazz, to create heterogenous, forward-looking music that eloquently describes the complex cultural landscape they inhabit.

Couch
Neo-Krautrock from Munich! Couch drifts, slides, and sometimes flies through assorted warm, esoteric instrumental compositions that are equally influenced by experimental jazz and rock music.

Gonzales
Born a Jew in Canada, now an international musical prankster, Gonzales strives to be the entertainer of the future: he combines hip hop, electro-funk, lounge, and new age goofiness to create his ironic and often surreal musical pastiches.

Freischwimmer 5 Years Of Kitty-Yo
Gonzales Uber Alles - 2000

Kante
Beautiful, sweeping, spacy, and atmospheric post-rock-electronica-pop from Germany that defies even the longest hyphenated description. Kante will lure you close to your speakers with whispered half-promises and glimpses of enticing landscapes. Take the bait; you won't be sorry.

Zwischen Den Orten - 1999

Laub
This is abstract German electronica that bridges the gap between Donna Regina, Bjork, and Moloko with ingenious creativity. Laub, along with labels Playhouse, Perlon, and Grow!, are defining a very specific and subtle German techno sound that is truly cutting edge.

Kopflastig - 1997
Intuition (Remixes) - 1999

Raz Ohara
Danish electronic soul troubadour Raz Ohara kicks out the jams with cartoon-sexy electrified postmodern pop full of breathy vocals and sinuous grooves.

Realtime Voyeur

Peaches
You might think you've heard everything, but you ain't heard anything quite like Peaches' raw, punk-flavored...hip hop? This Canadian dynamo raps slow hypersexual come-on lyrics over the primitive, slightly ominous beats of her Roland MC505 Groovebox, creating twisted little songs that are as in-your-face as they are difficult to categorize.

Lovertits EP - 2000
The Teaches of Peaches (Bonus Reissue) - 2002

Rechenzentrum
Rechenzentrum, the latest in the seemingly endless line of top-flight German production outfits, lays down a heady brew of abstract electronic hip hop, dark minimal click house, and subtle tech house. Attention Markus Nikolai, Pole, and Losoul fans: this one is for you.

Rechenzentrum - 2000
The John Peel Session - 2001

Surrogat
Shards of guitar writhe above driving bass and drums, while the singer urgently pleads for something -- in German. But you don't have to be bilingual to appreciate the strained power of his words.

Hobby
Rock - 2001

Tarwater
The subtle blip-mapping of Robert Lippok provides a skeletal landscape running under lyrics that sound like they could be written by T Rex's Marc Bolan. Cold and inviting just the way German art was meant to be.

11/6 12/10 - 1996
Silur - 1998
Remix EP - 1999
Animals, Suns and Atoms - 2000
Rabbit Moon Remixed - 2000

To Rococo Rot
This Berlin-based instrumental trio creates a complex world with warm, busy textures, smooth rhythms, and off-kilter sampling that reflects both a love for pop music and an inclination towards art school experimentalism. To Rococo Rot's music subtly bridges the divide between rock and electronic music.
