Gern Blandsten Records

From its New Jersey HQ across the river from the Big Apple, Gern Blansten has long been a staple in the indie community, focusing efforts on small batches of releases that range from hip hop to punk rock. Gern Blansten helped pioneer the early emo-punk underground with releases from the likes of Merel and Native Nod. The label is run by onetime Rorshach frontman and current Computer Cougar shamen Charles Maggio.

1.6 Band
Fugazi-like vocals span across artillery time changes as 1.6 Band deconstruct each of their songs. Drum-driven and guitar-molded sections create a soundscape worthy of the post-traumatic stress disorder that they usually inflict upon their audience.

Broke Up - 1997

All Natural Lemon and Lime Flavors
No band has created textures this complex since My Bloody Valentine. Obvious influences for ANL&LF are Stereolab and Unwound (with a smidgen of recent Blonde Redhead) but the face of their music is calm and tender and almost lost in the swirling sandstorm of their ravenous textures.

Turning Into Small
All Natural Lemon and Lime Flavors
Straight Blue Line

Chisel
This seminal though short-lived DC band combined the energy of their native city's hardcore scene with the mod revivalism of The Jam into an infectious and undeniable sound.

8 A.M. All Day - 1996
Set You Free - 1997

Computer Cougar
Computer Cougar makes raw, frenetic, garagy punk rock like Devo crossed with Wire. They'll make you want to slam dance, drag-race your car, and program your VCR at the same time!

Rough Notes On High Stress
Taking A Chance On Chances

Dalek
Dalek is an anomaly...rap rock or something not yet defined. An angry tempest of hip-hop rhythms, ambient noise, destructive vocals, and almost random samples creates a surreal setting for an original style.

Negro, Necro, Nekros - 1998

Garden Variety
Emotionally intense pop-punk with blazing guitars and forceful rhythms. Their name definitely doesn't suggest their status as a powerful musical entity.

Knocking the Skill Level - 1994
Garden Variety - 1997

The Impossible Five
These kids are espionage on vinyl. Think 007 from Chicago -- all the style of a slick well-armed guy in a tux standing in the midst of a bunch of sweating screaming indie punks.

Eleven Hours in Antwerp - 1999

The Lapse
The Lapse are an indie trio with a touch of trip hop sensibilities, using Blonde Redhead's alluring vocal style in their downtempo pop lullabies.

Betrayal - 1998

Ted Leo/Pharmacists
Former Chisel frontman Ted Leo gets behind the wheel of a new rock band, the Pharmacists, with buddies from the Make Up, Warmers, and Secret Stars. Raw, soulful, and sometimes political punk-inflected rock in the vein of The Jam.

Tej (?) Leo Rx/Pharmacists - 1999
Treble In Trouble - 2000
The Tyranny Of Distance - 2001
Hearts of Oak - 2003

Native Nod
Indie rock fixture Chris Leo's first recorded material from the early '90s offers a preface to his later work with The Lapse and The Van Pelt.

Today Puberty, Tomorrow The World

Pilot To Gunner
Brooklyn, New York's Pilot to Gunner provides a new chapter in post-punk history with their spidery, unconventional song structures, driving rhythms, and indie energy.

Hit the Ground and Hum - 1999
Games At High Speeds - 2001

Radio 4
Radio 4 travels back in time to late '70s England to borrow the twitchy, danceable rhythms of second wave punk and bring them back to 21st century New York City.

The New Song And Dance
Dance To The Underground
Gotham! - 2002

Rye Coalition
Monster bass sounds and relentless guitars swarm around a new Bohnam. Inspired by bands like Jesus Lizard, Shellac, and AC/DC, Rye Coalition's members make no excuse for their behavior.

The Lipstick Game - 1999
Hee Saw Dhuh Kaet - 1999
On Top - 2002
Jersey Girls EP - 2003

The Van Pelt
Members of Blonde Redhead, Native Nod, and Greyhouse bring you simple and smothering guitar harmonies and sincere vocals. Listening to their music, you get the impression that life just hasn't been easy on them.

Stealing From Our Favorite Thieves - 1996
Sultans of Sentiment - 1999

Weston
Energetic and melodic pop-punk for those who like to sing along to blaring music as they drive alone in their cars.

A Real-Life Story of Teenage Rebellion - 1994
Splitsville - 1994

The Yah Mos
Before !!!, before Out Hud, there were the Yah Mos, a cheerfully schizophrenic Sacramento punk outfit who staged some of the most enjoyable musical car accidents you'd ever want to hear.

Undefeated - 2001
