Flameshovel Records

Flameshovel, as they put it, has love to give. Started, like so many indie labels, to put out the record of friends (Judah Johnson), the label is the product of efforts by Jesse Woghin and James Kenler, who seem to have settled in Chicago after attempting to run the whole shebang from both the windy city and Brooklyn, NY.

Ancient Greeks
Chicago's Ancient Greeks call their work math-pop and they're precisely right. Pulling from post-bop jazz, bossa nova, soul, and the minimalism of indie rock, the Greeks are manically melodic.

The Song Is You - 2003

The Dudley Corporation
Emo from Ireland? Yes, the Dudley Corporation puts its hometown of Dublin, Ireland squarely on the indie rock map.

The Lonely World of the Dudley Corporation - 2002

Low Skies
The young ghosts of Middle America channel their haunts into Chicago's Low Skies. The quintet delivers reverb-drenched tales of death, driving and Texas with post-apocalyptic whispers in the spirit of David Lynch and Johnny Cash.

The Bed - 2003

The Race
The Race is a strangely mesmerizing off-kilter pop combo from Chicago. Tension and rhythmic drama meets tender pleading, all playing into such a charming blend, you'll have to take multiple listens.

The Perfect Gift - 2002
