Thanks to DJ Fingaz, the "San Diego Slugger," the hip hop 12-inch has taken its place beside the surfboard and the Padres ball cap as one of the city's leading cultural symbols. In barely three years, Fingaz has established Certified as the premier West Coast hip hop label, serving up a connoisseur's menu of battle breaks records for DJs (with the likes of Mr. Dibbs), choice cuts by groups like Homeliss Derelix, Planet Asia, and Encore, and mix tapes and CDs by genre-bending turntablists like Marcus B. He has also helped spawn the 1200 Hobos, a bicoastal community of DJs and turntablists.
