Chicago’s JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound recorded their first session with Epitonic saki to promote the 2011 debut LP Want More. That first album and the session we recorded showcased an up-and-coming young band channeling a retro indie-infused soul sound.
JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound returned to saki this year for our Off the Record series that celebrates new releases, sponsored by the City of Chicago. This time the group joined us to showcase their second album Howl. Recorded in Montreal with top producer Howard Bilerman (Arcade Fire, Wolf Parade, Godspeed You! Black Emperor), Howl finds the band a new unique identity drenched in an 80’s 4AD-esque post punk darkness mixed with the Uptown Sound’s patented soul.
The recordings from these sessions were easily some of our best sounding to date. As an added bonus we had local alternative radio host Marty Lennartz from WXRT conduct a great interview with JC and guitarist Billy. At the end of the interview, the band were even coaxed by the audience to play a seventh encore song. Enjoy the initial set, interview, and encore here, then visit their website.
