To me, the most exciting part about traveling or otherwise leaving a comfortable situation is the process of making the unfamiliar familiar. As much as I enjoy my oddball routines, I also get bored if I'm not challenged, and I love seeing how quickly I can go from having to think about navigating a situation to knowing exactly what to expect, both brain and muscle memory-wise. How long until I can fake it through a conversation in a foreign language I'm not good at, or move through a new-to-me grocery store without thinking? When will I know how late I can push it in the morning and still make it somewhere (mostly) on time? When will they get uncomfortably familiar with my order at a coffee shop? Most importantly, is my crazy showing?
