I started playing in a metal band when I was fifteen with the intent of poking fun at some of the music in our local scene. After diving into songwriting, recording, and gigging with that band, I slowly began to love metal. I've always preferred the sludgier side of the genre, and as a result I never really found a large stateside festival that appealed to me. When I finally looked overseas, I came across Roadburn Festival in Tilberg, The Netherlands.

Since beginning in 1995, Roadburn has brought together bands such as Orange Goblin, Masters of Reality, Electric Wizard, High on Fire, Hawkwind, Neurosis, Melvins, Big Business, The Sword, Wolves in the Throne Room, Boris, Isis, Earth, Mono, Baroness, and Minsk. Holy shit.

Roadburn 2012 begins today with performances by Black Tusk, Chelsea Wolfe, Hammers of Misfortune, Killing Joke, Om, Red Fang, Voivod and many more heavy and dark acts. The rest of the weekend features performances by bands such as Nachtmystium, Bongripper, Jucifer, Pelican (who has a freshly released EP), and Sleep (who recently announced a remastered re-release of Dopesmoker with spacey new art). They arranged an amazing amount of full album performances, including bands who are playing other sets at the festival as well.

I won't be there in person this year so I put together this playlist that includes a small segment of the artists that are performing, plus some related artists. See you in 2013?
