Viva Las Vegas

Frank Rudrow and Jose Luis Garcia have been making music together since 1994 in the band Manta Ray. One of the most influential Spanish rock bands of the last two decades, Manta Ray has released five successful records since 1994. Viva Las Vegas is a side project that has received attention not only because of its all-star lineup, but also because of its creative sound. Rudrow and Garcia create melodic, layered songs reminiscent of Yo La Tengo or Calexico. It is very easy to get lost in the driving spirit of the music and the Spanish verse of Garcia. Viva Las Vegas transcends the confines of language, culture, and style. The music's languid pace allows you to take a panoramic picture of each verse, chorus, and change.

In October of 2001, Viva Las Vegas released an album with the ubiquitous Chris Brokaw (Codeine, Come, The New Year, Consonant) that sparked some serious interest in the band. The self-titled follow up is a balanced, flowing excursion to the city streets in the back of your mind. The disc features an extremely scenic soundscape with odd samples and airy guitar work that eases you through the tracks. The songs on this disc possess a quiet passion reminiscent of Arab Strap or Pedro the Lion. Given Manta Ray's success, you may question the life cycle of a successful side project like Viva Las Vegas. Hopefully Rudrow and Garcia will be working on a new Viva Las Vegas following the release of next Manta Ray effort in 2003.
