Various Artists - American Roots Music
Palm

American Roots Music is a fabulous collection of music assembled by producers Jim Brown and Sam Pollard, Bob Dylan manager Jeff Rosen, and Palm chairman and famed music industry executive Chris Blackwell for a four-part PBS documentary of the same name. The magnificent retrospective examines the music of the pioneers of American folk, folk-rock, bluegrass, cowboy and Western music, traditional country, Delta blues, Chicago electric blues, gospel, Cajun, Zydeco, Tejano, and Native American music. One of the pleasures of this collection is hearing how complementary the songs of these seminal musicians from disparate backgrounds and geographical origins truly is -- and how much these various styles influenced and were influenced by one another. In time, American Roots Music is sure to rank with the fabled Smithsonian Folkways' Anthology of American Folk Music as one of the finer overviews of the history of American regional music. Make sure to catch the documentary when it airs, beginning October 29.
