Utah!
Arborvitae
Despite their obvious enthusiasm for the Mormon state, this delightful quartet is actually from Kalamazoo, Michigan. Utah! plays an inviting blend of emotional indie rock and math rock akin to several of the other Midwest bands of a similar ilk like The Promise Ring, Hey Mercedes and Rainer Maria. The uniqueness of Utah! hinges on Anne Polesnak's cello work and the clean, brisk guitars of Eddie Pellino, as they mellow out the sharp structuring, making their songs delicate and friendly despite the often aggressive tendencies. Their debut album Zoo Sounds & Destructovision follows two limited edition EPs and was recorded by Bob Weston at Steve Albini's Electrical Audio studio in Chicago. The song here is a good representation of the ragged indie pop the band has to offer.
