Ty
Big Dada
Eclectic U.K. underground MC Ty came to fame in the '90s via articulate guest spots alongside the likes of Talib Kweli and DJ Hi-Tek and Jeru The Damaja. The son of Nigerian parents, Ty was born in London and discovered hip hop (specifically MC Mell 'O') in primary school, eventually becoming a dancer. Ty's solo rhyme debut on one of I.G. Culture's (aka New Sector Movement) One Drop Inter Outer albums launched a string of collaborations throughout the U.K. indie hip hop scene (notably with Nextmen, Unsung Heroes, and Funky DL) and a gig as host of London's Lyrical Lounge series.
Ninja Tune subsidiary Big Dada released Ty's 2001 solo debut Awkward, a soulful, anti-gangsta, relatively guest-free exploration of varied hip hop terrain that placed Ty among the U.K. MC elite.
