The Infesticons
Big Dada
The Infesticons is the brainchild of accomplished New York City hip hop producer Mike Ladd. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Ladd has shared the stage with the likes of KRS-One, De La Soul, and the Last Poets. Easy Listening For Armageddon, his '97 debut album for Scratchie/Mercury, was met with critical acclaim by the music press and led to a deal with Ninja Tune-owned Big Dada.
For Gun Hill Road, Ladd enlists fellow Infesticons El-P (Company Flow), the Anti-Pop Consortium, Saul Williams, and the Sonic Sum crew, to name but a few (indeed, the rest would prefer to remain nameless). Ladd himself adopts the guise of Infesticon #0 for both "Hero Theme," "Tiger Theme" (with Erik M.O.), and "Night Time Theme" (with Infesticon #.01 and Madashellicon).
The album is intensely creative. Its 13 tracks encompass Kool Keith-influenced leftfield hip hop rhymes, abstract operatic rhythms, grungy guitars, and slam poetry. You never know what to expect, but then again, it's the element of surprise that wins wars.
