Surface

The hardcore band Surface -- not to be confused with the '80s soul trio -- existed for only about two years during the mid-'90s, but those years were intense and explosive. The band?s one full-length, Seven Times over the Fold, featuring "Mark of Indication" and "Makeshift," showcases their dark, churning, chaotic assault. This is the sound of the earth bucking and heaving, then suddenly opening up to swallow you. Surface fiercely asserted their humane, socially conscious, punk-inflected ideology with brutal guitars and ravaged, torn-up vocals. This is brilliant hardcore, both emotional and political, that refuses to let anything get in its way.
