Stigma Rock Unit
Squealer Music
Stigma Rock Unit is from the college town of Blacksburg, Virginia, and they seem to know a thing or two about writing good music. Their intricate songs incorporate powerful guitars and fierce concise drumming with strong, yet muted, emotional vocals. "Dutch Courage" is a sprawling epic that gradually builds to a roaring climax of pounding rhythms and raging melodies before cutting you loose with a gentle vocal caress. "Texas Hollow Road" is a classic earnest emo song a la The Promise Ring, complete with geographical imagery, keening guitar, and impassioned vocals. How could you resist a line like "And the record store smells of skateboard punk erections"? It's angsty, it's honest, and it's awesome.
The seven-inch single, "Texas Hollow Road," was recorded fitfully at Subzero in Silver Spring in May of 1995 with W.C. Barbot of Jawbox and Burning Airlines making an early production effort, and then released in the fall of 1995.
