The Sleepytime Trio started out in Harrisonburg, VA, as a side project of the band Maximillian Colby in the fall of 1994. The original members were Drew Ringo on guitar, Ben Davis on bass, and Jonathan Fuller on
drums. They played shows around the mid-Atlantic region and then in the
summer of '95 added guitarist Dave Nesmith who had played with Ringo in Maximillian Colby. As Maximillian Colby began dissipating, Sleepytime Trio became
everybody's full time band. With the line-up set, the no-longer-three-piece Trio did a whirlwind tour in the summer of 1996, playing 20 shows in 17 days from Virginia to Florida, Chicago, Quebec, and back to Washington, DC.
Sleepytime's sound brings to mind a vision of a world seen through the eyes
of robots on the verge of malfunctioning and causing worldwide upheaval.
Indeed, Sleepytime maintains a sometimes-tenuous grasp on the side of control over chaos. Thie live shows were constantly surprising, as the band often appeared to be in the brink of spontaneous combustion.
In 1998, the band took an extended hiatus when Ringo relocated to Seattle and the remaining members went on to form Engine Down, The Rah Bras, and
Milemarker. However, for five magical, life-changing days in May 1998, the
Sleepytime Trio lived again, playing shows in Chapel Hill, D.C.,
Philadelphia, Worcester, and New York in rapid succession. Though that tour may prove to be the band's only live reunion, their fabulously frantic music lives on in recorded form for all to enjoy.
