This Louisville, Kentucky foursome's debut album, The Tennessee Fire, is crowded with so many ghosts of American music it'll make you shiver. Hank Williams is here, and so are Woody Guthrie, Gram Parsons, Alex Chilton, and Neil Young. My Morning Jacket channels all these spirits to create its own completely distinct, echoey, reverb-drenched sound, full of perfect harmonies and searching, lonesome lyrics. Occasionally the band recalls fellow Louisvillian Will Oldham, but My Morning Jacket's songs aren't fragile and broken like Palace's -- even when they're at their saddest and most haunted, My Morning Jacket play big, resonant, stately songs you really feel deep down inside you. At the center of it all is singer-songwriter Jim James's remarkable voice, which can sound paper thin like Luna and ex-Galaxie 500 singer Dean Wareham's, wounded like Radiohead singer Thom Yorke's, hunted and anguished like Oldham's, and sometimes deep, masculine, and resigned like the voices of tear-in-your-beer country singers of decades past.
