Luke Mullen and Jules Evans have been producing together as Muki since the late '90s. Mullen, an accomplished jazz pianist, joined his first jazz-funk band at the tender age of 16. Evans also started his career at a young age, producing for the likes of Tony Sapiano and Sabres of Paradise. Evans can also be spotted in the studio, producing for The Underwolves, The Western Rebel Alliance, and Salmonella Dub. As Muki, Mullen and Evans combine intelligent programming and live musicianship to create post-party downtempo grooves. Their eclectic sound appealed to Mantra Recordings/Beggars Group -- sub-label to Beggars Banquet -- which signed them to a growing roster which now includes The Delgados, Saint Etienne, and Gorky's Zygotic Mynci.

Their '98 debut album, Cabin Fever, explored minimal electro, funky techno, oceanic drum and bass, and smooth downtempo grooves. As you can tell, these guys like to mix and match. The album was well-received by the more avant-garde music press and DJs such as Laurent Garnier, Mr. Scruff, Patrick Forge, and Dr. Bob Jones. The '00 follow-up album, Quiet Riot, leaned even further towards the downtempo vibe. The track names themselves ("Funky Sofa," "Floating," and "Spaceout") indicate the album's deep, relaxed mood. "I Don't Want To Know" is a standout track from the album. Sophie Barker's folksy vocals ride atop a wave of sweet guitars, subtle keys, and sparse funky breaks. Slap on your phones, crank up the volume, and escape into Muki's tension-free world.
