Minus 8
Compost
Like many electronic music producers, Switzerland's Robert Jan Meyer is also an accomplished architect. When he's not designing offices and apartment buildings, he sits glued to his Mac making beats as Minus 8. Meyer formed Minus 8 in response to the hectic rave music of the early '90s played at, well, plus 8, and subsequently released his debut twelve on DJ Cam's Inflammable imprint. An album later, Meyer was picked up by the Sony sub Higher Ground, slipping in comfortably alongside the likes of Grooverider and DJ Rap. He produced one album for the label before heading East to Munich's Compost. His jazzy, midtempo Compost debut album, Elysian Fields, was an underground hit and even captured the attention of Steve Jobs, who commissioned "Snowblind" for an Apple Powerbook commercial. Fresher than the Swiss air and funkier than a yodeler in fancy dress, "Come Along" is featured on Compost One Hundred, which is, funnily enough, Compost's 100th release. "At The Beach" is featured on Meyer's '02 Compost album, Minuit.
