Miguel Frasconi
New Albion Records
Best known for his work with glass bowls and instruments -- in his early career he was a founding member of The Glass Orchestra, a new music ensemble which used all glass instruments -- Miguel Frasconi also employs a variety of western and nonwestern instruments to create a very unique sound. Though his work reflects the influence of Brian Eno and John Cage, with whom he has worked, his style is entirely his own.
Song + Distance is a varied collection in terms of both instrumentation and thematic content. "Desert Melody" was composed for a roving performance art piece in San Francisco and featured an assortment of portable western instruments -- accordion, frame drum, and violin. "Chabi's Dream," a collage of percussion and vocal samples, was the accompaniment to a puppet show depicting the story of Kublai Khan and his wife Chabi.
