There can be little doubt that Norway's
Mayhem, the godfathers of the
Scandinavian black metal movement, are the
most evil group of musicians who have ever
walked the earth or ever will again; none of
their followers, not even the notoriously evil
Emperor can rival this
band. Their legacy is one of murder, suicide,
church-burning, and even cannibalism -- not to
mention some of the most frighteningly hateful
music ever made. While Mayhem still
exists, today only drummer Hellhammer
remains; the band's other members are all dead
or in prison.
Mayhem's sound is archetypal: huge,
evil guitar work, unintelligible Satanic sounding
vocals, and occasional forays into creepy
synthesized dark ambience. Their most recent
work is 2001's Grand Declaration of
War, an astonishingly complex black metal
epic.
