Mark Farina's musical legacy dates back to '88, when he befriended Derrick Carter while digging in the crates of a Chicago record shop. As Symbols in Instruments, the duo released the '89 KMS classic, "Moods," subsequently licensed to Network in the U.K. A self-professed "traveling minstrel," Farina set up the Mushroom Jazz club night in his adopted city of San Francisco in '92. With its synthesis of friendly hip hop, comfy downtempo, and cinematic lounge, the night set the tone for San Francisco in the mid-'90s and inspired a generation of would-be deck-wranglers. When not moonlighting for Moonshine Music and Imperial Dub, Farina releases mix CDs and occasional singles for San Francisco's quite excellent Om Records. Mushroom Jazz 4 features a whopping 19 tracks of slow-burning, sweet and sexy soul from the likes of Pete Rock, People Under the Stairs, Trankilou, Julius Papp & Dave Warrin, and Farina himself under the Bernal Boogie guise.
