Lovage

Lovage is Nathaniel Merriweather (aka Dan "the Automator" Nakamura) in sleazy French tickler mode. San Francisco-raised Nakamura began his electronic career as a club DJ during the '80s. His status as a producer took off following the tripped-out '96 Dr. Octagon release Dr. Octagonecologyst, which he worked on with former Ultramagnetic MC Kool Keith and DJ Q-Bert. Production and remixing work for the likes of The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Herbie Hancock, and the Beastie Boys added to Nakamura's cross-genre cred before his '99 Handsome Boy Modeling School collaboration with Prince Paul yielded the highly acclaimed So...How's Your Girl? LP for Tommy Boy Records, making "The Automator" a household name. More recently, Nakamura collaborated with post-Armageddon galaxy dwellers Deltron 3030 and cartoon combo Gorillaz.

For 75 Ark's latest off-kilter hip hop/downtempo album Music To Make Love To Your Old Lady By, Nakamura is joined by vocalists Mike Patton (Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Fantomas) and the lovely Jennifer Charles (Elysian Fields). Special guests include Afrika Bambaataa, Ninja Tune artist Kid Koala, Prince Paul (as Chest Rockwell), Damon Albarn (as Damien Thorn VII), and Maseo/Plug 3 of De La Soul. The resulting vocal/lounge laments may be a bit too smooth for some palettes, but those with a sense of humor and a love of well-produced downtempo sounds will find favor in Nakamura and his unique brand of naughty funk.
