LCD Soundsystem
DFA Records
LCD Soundsystem is the latest production offering of James Murphy, co-founder of New York's DFA Records and one half of the city's very relevant DFA production team. With his partner, Mo Wax co-founder Tim Goldsworthy, Murphy has done production work for numerous artists, including David Holmes, BS2000, The Rapture, Radio 4, Les Savy Fav, and Juan Maclean. Murphy's was in two highly underrated bands Pony and Speedking, the later was recently given the retrospective treatment by Tiger Style Records.
Murphy's first DFA single under the LCD Soundsystem moniker conjure up images of an after party Andy Warhol might have thrown during Studio 54's heyday. Both LCD tracks, "Beat Connection" and "Losing My Edge," are filled with Murphy's nervous monotone lyrics, coyly delivered a la David Byrne. To get a good idea of the LCD's sound one must imagine Daft Punk, Chic and the Talking Heads in the back room of a seedy NYC dive engaged in an anything-goes sexathon circa 1978. To some that might sound like the ingredients to a funky itch, but to most it will definitely sound like sweet music.
