Because they play extremely slow indie rock and because they're centered around a Mormon husband-and-wife duo, Landing is bound to be compared with Low. And while such comparisons aren't entirely inaccurate, it's probably more apropos to compare Landing to another great Midwestern indie rock couple, Windy & Carl (with whom Landing has toured and recorded). Like those ambient rock cosmonauts, Landing makes soaringly gorgeous, mostly instrumental music that reaches toward the eaves of the sky via lovely, slow-burning psychedelic drones.
The aforementioned couple at Landing's center is Aaron and Adrienne Snow, who play guitar and synthesizer respectively and both contribute occasional heavily reverbed, distant vocal parts. They met in Utah at Brigham Young University and began playing together in 1997 under the name May Landing, channeling their mutual affection for The Cure, Cocteau Twins, Slowdive, and Kranky bands like Jessamine, Labradford, and Windy & Carl into their own shimmering, narcotic compositions. Over the next couple of years they recruited drummer/bassist Daron Gardner and bassist Dick Baldwin. Then, at the end of 1999, the entire band picked up and moved to Middletown, Connecticut. That same year, the group released its first official album, their five-song Centrefuge EP.
Over the course of the next year, between tours with Low, Windy and Carl, Tristeza, and others, Landing issued their Circuit CD. In 2001, Landing put out Oceanless, a CD comprised of older material from the Utah days. From that album, "Rial Veed Fiir" is a beautiful track reminiscent of Loveless-era My Bloody Valentine, featuring scratchy vinyl loops and faint, muted vocals which shadow-dance their way through layers of warm, soporific reverbed guitar, bass, and percussion. In 2002, the group returned again with their Fade In/Fade Out EP, another meteoric guitar-and-Moog journey through the stars. The five-song, 37-minute release features "Whirwind," a grand piece of blissful ambient minimalism that takes you up into the rafters of the cosmic chapel.
