Matador Records
Hailing from Manchester, England, Dylan Nathan, licensed pilot, BMX fanatic, computer hacker, and animation artist, is (also) an electronic artist of the highest caliber. Having hung out with the likes of Richard James (Aphex Twin) and Mike Paradinas (Mu-ZIQ) at architecture college, Nathan went on to create his own unique brand of IDM for the Skam imprint (home to Boards of Canada). Spectrum -- his '98 debut album on Mike Paradinas' Planet Mu label -- combines fucked-up elements of drum and bass, breakbeat, and jungle. The album (subsequently licensed by Matador in the U.S.) inspired a generation of drill 'n' bass producers.
Geometry, released simultaneously on Matador (in the U.S.) and Planet Mu (in the U.K.) in October, 2000, is an altogether more melancholic affair. Combine the complexity of Aphex Twin and Autechre with the soulful remorse of Motor City's faithful (Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, and Juan Atkins) and you are one step closer to his sound.
