Jan Cardell
Multimood Records/Staalplaat
Jan Cardell is a Swedish artist who
makes mechanically functional sculptures that
play music. His "rytmobiles" are made from an
assortment of materials, including steel, iron,
papier-mâché, rubber, and glass,
and they perform musical compositions using a
time-coded flow of information and
computer-controlled devices . The process for
executing a song begins when Cardell
loads the composition's musical information
onto a series of microcomputers via a unique
program he wrote himself. Sound is created
when the microcomputers trigger electric
spools that move the sculpture's arms. The
arms move and strike different forms, creating
a range of sounds. The music on
Rytmobile, Cardell's first
recording using this process, is composed by
Lena J:son Sanner, and a second
album of Cardell's own compositions is
forthcoming.
