James Combs

Don't let the falsetto fool you: James Combs' world is not all happy-go-lucky. He creates songs that draw you in with their lilting vocals, invite you to stay with their lovely instrumentation, and then force you to think about their stories filled with heartbreak, distrust, and codependency. The music ranges from very simple acoustic guitar to more complex instrumental arrangements, but every song has a sincere, almost confessional tone and a rockin' energy bubbling just below the surface. For fans of Rufus Wainwright's vocal style and Elliot Smith's dark narratives.
Combs had bounced from Indiana to Boston to Indiana to Chicago before finally arriving in northern California in the summer of 1998. Along the way, he spent a few years writing songs for the Indiana-based art rock group Arson Garden, which the Chicago Reader called "the only art rock band in North America that matters." Arson Garden released three albums, performed a Peel Session for the BBC in London, and toured extensively throughout the US and Europe.
Combs released his first solo album, Remotor, in the spring of 1999 on Berkeley's Bliss Recordings. His first record on Ubiquity Records, Please Come Down, comes out in the spring of 2001.
