Gene Moore
Birdman Records
Though he worked professionally as a blues drummer who backed the likes of
Brownie McGhee, Gene Moore also penned one of the creepiest scores
in movie history. Moore's delightfully otherworldly score was one of the
primary reasons that Carnival of Souls, a Grade Z 1962 horror flick made on a
shoestring budget, has become a cult classic (it was remade by Wes Craven
in 1998). As screenwriter John Clifford noted, were it not for Moore's
score, more than half the film would have been silent; its presence gave the movie a
ghastly, ghostly atmosphere that made it distinctive and memorable. These ethereal from-
beyond-the-grave organ compositions will put your teeth on edge and make you start
checking in closets and behind doors for ghosts and monsters.
