Born in South Africa, Gavin Hardkiss now makes his home in the Western Addition in San Francisco. This troubadour spends weekdays producing music and playing soccer and weekends jetting out to entertain funky hedonists with his provocative beats and gamma rays. He loves playing in exotic locations -- a forest in Eugene Oregon, an abandoned whaling station near Valparaiso, Chile, the surrealist Discoteque Rachdingue near Barcelona, Spain or among the local wildlife in the Lower Haight in San Francisco. Hardkiss has also recently completed the production of a sonic DJ soundscape for the Airtight Garage attraction at the new Sony Metreon entertainment complex in San Francisco.
Hardkiss also composes music under the guise of Hawke. The debut Hawke album Namaquadisco was released last year on Sunburn Records in the U.S.A. and Distance in Europe. Other 12-inch vinyl releases include "3 Nudes in a Purple Garden," "Acid Funk," and "Erections from Namaquadisco Vol. 1, 2 and 3." A brand new Hawke 12-inch called "Theme from Sticky Trumpets" will soon be released on Sunburn.
This year, for the first time, Hawke has been throwing down live shows across the U.S.A. Stupified crowds in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Portland, Seattle, Miami, and Orlando have been witness to the adventurous sound collisions. Skipping all over the tempo map, the shows include live instrumentation by a combination of various musicians: Laron (guitar), Jay (guitar), Shaheen (drums) and Al-Jay (vibes).
DJing is still Hardkiss's number one love. Recent sets in San Francisco and across the planet have been a hybrid sound of new school breaks, jet set disco, super electro-dub, and the tropical sounds of global precipitation. We
never know where he's off to next.
