Elwood (born Prince Elwood Strickland III) originally hails from North Carolina, and his distinct southern heritage can be felt in the summerlike haziness and languidness of his music, which rolls together loose funk, smoky jazz grooves, lush melodies, and hip hop sensibilities. With co-producer
Brian Boland, his debut album, The Parlance Of Our Time, is the natural progeny of Prince, the Beastie Boys, Beck, and Propellerheads.
Elwood grew up listening to his grandfather's country records, but his musical destiny led him to spend a decade working as an engineer at the Greene Street Recording facility in New York's Soho district. It was perfect timing, as the studio soon became a focal point of the hip hop elite. During his time there, Elwood worked on recordings by Tricky, Mos DefPete Rock, De La Soul, Prince Paul, Adam Yauch, The Jungle Brothers, and Black Eyed Peas.
With his diverse musical background, Elwood eventually developed his unique sound that combines prog-rap elements with heady and seductive pop and bluesy funk. The mixture is then topped off with insightful, complex lyrics that drop into the heady and lush rhythms and arrangements.
The first single is a remake of Gordon Lightfoot's 1974 smash, "Sundown." The cover has a millennial approach, and was produced by U.K. legend Steve Lillywhite, who has worked with U2, The Rolling Stones, and XTC, among other high profile artists.
