DJ Food
Ninja Tune
DJ Food was, and still is, one of the most misinterpreted monikers on Ninja Tune's roster. Let's get this straight. DJ Food is not one person. Rather, it is a collective of downtempo producers on the same wavelength. It all began with Matt Black and Jonathan More (aka Coldcut), who released the first installments of the DJ Food catalog back in the early '90s. In time they were joined by Patrick Carpenter (PC), Paul Brook, Paul Rabiger, Strictly Kev, and Isaac Elliston, to name but a few. Recipe For Disaster (released at the tail end of '95) was hailed as one of their greatest works -- that is, until Kaleidoscope hit the streets 5 years later.
On that album, bandleaders PC and Strictly Kev were joined by guest performers Bundy K. Brown (ex-Tortoise, now Directions In Music and Pullman), Ken Nordine (narrative maestro), and Ali Tod. "The Crow" is an abstract fusion of jazz and leftfield hip hop that is dark and smoky in equal measures. "Nocturne (Sleep Dyad 1)" is a mesmerizing blend of kitsch '70s panpipes and subtle moving breaks. The remaining 10 tracks on Kaleidoscope are equally as impressive, making it an essential release for all true downtempo lovers.
