Danny Tenaglia
Global Underground

Danny Tenaglia is a DJ and producer whose talent and contributions to global dance culture are widely recognized. Tenaglia's sound is diverse, and he works both with more commercial vocal anthem projects and more dubby, progressive realms of rhythm.

Since Tenaglia is in demand for remixing duties far and wide, keeping abreast of his discography is a challenge: but it's a worthy one for house enthusiasts looking for high-caliber production. Tenaglia is quite proficient at programming the basslines and percussion that often have a churning, funky, slamming tribal sound. As a DJ, Tenaglia admits to being influenced both by other DJs and by great records by other artists over the years. As an artist, he uses elements of what appeals to him and forges ahead with often unique-sounding, ground-breaking tracks. Although Tenaglia's style is diverse, he mixes and blends by finding similarities and connections between disparate styles, which makes the mix flow.

A New Yorker by origin, Tenaglia left school at 17 to DJ and spent several years in Miami, home to seminal underground house label Murk. He was highly motivated and greatly influenced by a trip to London in 1988 where Paul Oakenfold musically captivated him. In 1990, Tenaglia returned to NYC to produce, gaining early recognition for a sensual dub of Right Said Fred's "I'm too Sexy." From there the only direction was up, as he worked with Peter Daou and pushed fellow artists Murk and D.C.s Deep Dish. He began importantly to take the funk and soul of U.S. house/garage and link that with the harsher, more techno-informed sounds of European electronic music, signaling a new shift in dance music that was pure warehouse style tech-house, with fat bottom end bass, jacking techno minimalism, and -- of course -- a bit of soul. He has played legendary venues such as Shelter, Twilo, and Tunnel and continues to earn new fans and seek out new music that he enjoys and that has something special. He also has remixed pop artists such as the Pet Shop Boys ("Red Letter Day") among others.
