Carpark Records
Milwaukee's pioneering experimental producer Erik Kowalski breaks all the rules with his pretty, introspective techno. After debuting on Star Star Stereo in '98 with an eponymous EP, he released a split seven-inch with Jessica Bailiff in '99, and dropped his debut full-length, Go Hawaii, on Wobblyhead in '00. His whimsical, folksy electronic creations appealed to the chaps at Carpark, who released his sophomore album Whole Numbers Play The Basics in September '02. Three years in the making, the album is cute, playful, and often goofy. Heavily filtered synths flirt with laid-back minimal beats on tracks that blend Autechre's futuristic programming with Gary Numan's dark pop sensibilities.
