Burakumin
Scientific Records
You might think that the two members of Burakumin had a persecution complex, given that they've named themselves after the lowest caste of traditional Japanese society. But a listen to their uniquely dark style of fragile indie folk plus programmed beats, electronic grooves, and occasional effects suggests no such neuroses. Often the miscegenation of guitars and electronics can be an dicey proposition, but Burakumin succeeds by letting its members plaintive voices and strummed guitars do the songs' emotional work and using electronics for eerie, melancholy color and texture. The duo's debut full-length, Early Mourning, is available on Scientific Records. It includes the songs "Angles of Decision" and "The Technology Saturday Guilt."
