Brise-Glace

When indie avant-gardian Jim O'Rourke is involved with a project, hold onto your hat, because you can be sure that the music you're subjected to will be difficult and complex, and that's most definitely the case with Brise-Glace (French for "ice-breaker"), which has his fingerprints all over it. Best known for his work with the experimental rock quartet Gastr del Sol, O'Rourke and Co. go a little further out with Brise-Glace, using guitar improvisation, low-level white noise, and found sounds to create a brooding, eerie musical world where nothing is as it seems and you never know what's around the corner. Brise-Glace's compositions are created with a stark economy that borders on minimal, making you just as aware of the sounds that aren't there as of the sounds that are.

It's definitely worth mentioning O'Rourke's cohorts in Brise-Glace, as they too have a fairly impressive noise/experimental/post-rock pedigree. Bassist Darin Gray is a veteran of Chicago bands Dazzling Killmen, You Fantastic!, and Yona-Kit, guitarist Dylan Posa has played with the The Flying Luttenbachers and Cheer-Accident, and drummer Thymme Jones has played with Cheer-Accident, You Fantastic!, and Yona-Kit.

Brise-Glace recorded just one album on Skin Graft back in early '94, a five-song, 50-minute piece of mania and intensity called When in Veritas..., which you can hear in all its fractured glory right here. Their only other release was a '94 seven-inch, "In Sisters All and Felony/Angels on Installment Plan."
