Diazepam, the new Resin/Dischord release from melodic D.C. post-punksters Bald Rapunzel, is a far cry from the dreamy, hazy, tranquil music one might expect from the album's title. And the contradictions continue, as the conflicting imagery of the band's name is also reflected in their music: sprawling, angular melodies (courtesy of singer/guitarist Bonnie Schlegel and guitarist Leo Douchette) are underscored by taut rhythms (thanks to drummer Katy Otto and bassist M.W. Hitt), and topped with soulful, keening, and almost folky vocals.
