Arcwelder
Touch and Go Records
Arcwelder formed in 1988 in the teeming musical hub of Minneapolis, Minnesota. They were called Tiltawhirl until 1990, when they were sued by the manufacturer of the Tilt-A-Whirl carnival ride and forced to change their name.
They decided to name themselves after one of their instrumental songs, "Arcwelder." Since settling on an identity, they have released scads of albums and singles filled with dynamic, badass rock and roll power. The members of Arcwelder trade instruments, but they never skimp on the noise: brothers Bill and Rob Graber swap back and forth between bass and guitar, and Scott Macdonald keeps the drums to himself but shares vocal duties with Bill Graber. The result is a powerful mixture of the thick, chunky bass that many people associate with Touch and Go Records, the kind of tight, restrained drumming and crisp, wailing guitar that go hand in hand with big fat rock, and an unsurpassed grasp of melody and harmony.
"Do Something Right," from their sixth studio album, Everest, combines the dark, angular energy of Jawbox-style post punk with the soaring possibility and pop sensibility of Hüsker Dü's good old-fashioned rock and roll.
