Grand Royal
With Daft Punk, Frederic Galliano, and Dimitri From Paris, Air is one of the most popular bands to surface from the pool of French electronic artists in the late '90s. Unlike their French counterparts, Air owe more to '70s electronic visionaries such as Jean-Michel Jarre, Rick Wakeman, and Vangelis than to techno and house dons Derrick May, Juan Atkins, and Kevin Saunderson. In other words, less of the boom boom, and more of the, umm, air.
The band's two members, Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benot Dunckel, were introduced in the early '90s by Alex Gopher. The three played in alternative band Orange until Godin and Dunckel left in '95 to form Air. Not to be outdone, Gopher went on to claim fame under his own name on the Solid imprint. Air's early singles for Source and Mo Wax led to a deal with Virgin. Their debut full-length, Moon Safari, was released in '98. Their second album (featuring their early works) entitled, Premiers Symptomes, followed in '99. In '00, they produced the soundtrack for Sofia Coppola's movie The Virgin Suicides.
"Planet Vega" is featured on At Home With The Groovebox on Grand Royal Records. The compilation -- which also includes tracks from Jean Jacques Perrey, Money Mark, Beck, and Sonic Youth -- is a tongue-in-cheek celebration of the Groovebox synthesizer.
