The Bay Area's aFRO-mYSTIK artfully takes the dizzying beatscapes of primitive tribal rhythms and uses live instrumentation to mold them to the electronic sounds of the future. With the vocals of Liana Young, Gina Rene (of Soulstice fame), and Ismail Azeem, the bumpin' bass of Mr. Bungle's Trevor Dunn, the
drums of Simone White (Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy), the percussion of Carlos Araiza, and the sampledelic production of Chris Smith aka DJ Fluid, aFRO-mYSTIK is the sound of dance music rooted in the traditions it grew out of. This is the past, the present, and the future.
"Future Tropic" is a delicious and innovative combination of Afro-Cuban soul with left-field samples and electronics that slip and slide under velvety vocals and itchy maracas. "Infinite Rhythm" comes with a splendid broken-beat remix from Chris Duckenfield and Richard Brown under their Swag moniker, and is featured on Om Lounge 5 (alongside cuts by Atjazz, Rithma, and Landslide). The "Instrumental" of "The Odyssey" is taken from Om's nu-jazz and broken beat mix series, Departures.
It's all about rhythm. aFRO-mYSTIK is a refreshingly fluid and constant exploration of rhythm. A six-piece, live, improvisational rhythm ensemble.
