Sisters Bianca and Sierra Casady are a study in opposed personas, one wise, one witchy. Their vocals struggle against one another in a battle of good and evil. Their sound is all tape hiss, found-sound percussive loops and obscure instruments. This is nothing new for fans of the dramatic twosome; however, on the second LP, Noah's Ark, they have found the tunes to match their ambition. On 2004's La Maison de Mon Reve, the CocoRosie "sound" was the star. Here they shift between grandiose showtune-like rockers ("South 2nd" and album highlight "Armageddon"), atmospheric ballads ("Bare Hides & Buffalo"), and lush, near commercial arrangements, such as the show stopping duet with Antony and the Johnsons vocalist Antony on "Beautiful Boyz." The near instrumental "Brazilian Sun" shows considerable range, featuring Devendra Banhart and a host of Brazilian instrumentation to become the centerpiece of an album with almost too many high points. The album is not without it's missteps, most notably its absurd artwork, but the giant leaps CocoRosie have made between albums make Noah's Ark one of the most exciting discoveries of 2005.
