Mates of State
Bring It Back
Polyvinyl Records

Remember that couple in high school who just couldn't keep their infatuation to themselves? They made out in the halls, sported hickeys proudly, and maybe even carved their names into each other's hands? Okay, maybe that last example is a little too dark -- especially for the likes of Mates of State, whose fourth album, Bring It Back, carries on with the premise of goofy love ballads and romantic melodies. However, cheesy as it seems, you almost need to step back and stare in admiration at Kori Gardner and Jason Hammel who, five years ago, quit their day jobs, got married, and went on a West Coast tour to deliver the message of their love. Having made it to their senior album, one feels compelled to take them seriously.

Themes aside, it is undeniable that Mates of State has the harmonious elements of music making down snap. They pump out saccharine filled pop, song after song. With resourceful drum layers over a bass-laden vintage Yamaha organ, the newlyweds croon out vocals that merge into a harmonized loop. Bring It Back features tracks with titles such as "Like U Crazy," but once your stomach settles, you realize you're enjoying the convulsively catchy beats. This is the stuff of subconscious mutiny -- you'll catch yourself jumping around to "Beautiful Dreamer" in the privacy of your kitchen and humming "So Many Ways" on your way to work. Gooey and cheerful as the songs may be, their creative construction builds a delightful album that just can't help but spread the joy.
